Medlars

About Medlars

An ancient nutriceutical fruit

With around 200 medlar trees in the edible woodland, we have one of the largest collections in the UK.  This fruit used to be very popular, providing a sweet fruit in late autumn and winter when there was little else around. However, as sugar became more available, it went out of fashion over the last 150 years and is now hardly known in this country. In contrast, it is still very popular in the middle east and central asia, where the plants originated.

We have three different cultivars; Nottingham (Go Nottingham!), Royal and Giant Flanders. The Nottingham is considered to have the best flavour of the three.

Nutritional benefits

  • High in Vitamins B & C
  • Low in carbohydrates; lower sugar content than both apples and pears
  • High in polyphenols which protect against cancer, inflammation and strokes as well as regulating blood sugars
  • The fruit, bark and leaves have been used as traditional medicine for hundreds of years
