Autumn Olive

Elaeagnus umbellata

About Autumn Olive

A jewel among berries

Autumn olive or Elaeagnus umbellata is a bushy shrub which is native to China, Japan and Korea. It is now found in many parts of the world, and in the USA is regarded as an invasive species and a problem plant.

However, here in the UK it is generally well behaved. It has the added benefit of being a nitrogen fixing plant, therefore taking in nitrogen from the air and feeding it into the soil which improves fertility for plants around it.

The berries are small; similar to red currants. They have unusual sliver sparkles on the skin. When ripe they are fairly sweet with a sour undertone and can be eaten straight off the bush. They are good added to yogurt or can replace currants in a muffin or cake.
